The latest album by counter-bassist Dan Loomis is an interesting and successful example of the so-called concept album. Loomis took the biblical story of Job to the workshop and wrapped it in a verbal - musical cycle. The idea originated about ten years earlier. Played at concerts and changed for almost a decade, it finally took its final form.
The album contains seven minutes of recitation (with music accompaniment) and seven corresponding musical compositions. The narrator of the recited fragments is Satan, and his role was played by Daniel Breaker, a Broadway actor, one of the stars of "Hamilton", the great musical hit of recent years. An interesting fact is that due to the tight schedule of performances, he recorded the whole issue on the album for less than an hour.
Satan's issues were written by Loomis. He is also the composer of all material except the final "Dear Lord" by John Coltrane. On the other hand, verses from various translations of the biblical Book of Job were used in musical works. The recording session was attended by guitarist Jeff Miles and drummer Jared Schonig and two Korean vocalists: Yoon Sun Choi and Song Yi Jeon.
Initially, I thought that the interludes with Satan's version of Job's story would be a bit tiring. However, Loomis focused on miniature forms (the concert version of the program is a bit more extensive in the matter of the libretto) and cleverly supplemented them with music. Thanks to this, both forms balance and complement each other. The real revelation of the album is the participation of both singing ladies.
Yoon Sun Choi and Song Yi Jeon are two more instruments in the Loomis musical puzzle. The most expressive and moving. They arouse admiration by singing and exciting vocals. They share a narrative in a common voice, but they can also contrast the story perfectly in two parallel lines. The songs are penetrated by elements of blues, ethnic music and songs, creating an extremely exciting, coherent whole. Finally, it is worth mentioning a few words about the leader of the entire enterprise. He runs his own quartet, he is a co-leader of the SPOKE group and The Wee Trio. In addition, he plays in the trios of Joel Frahm and Vadim Neselovsky, he plays the role of a sideman, he took part in the recording of the Book of Beriah Zornow's shekel. These recommendations and the disc described here are one more argument to watch Loomis's actions closely.

Najnowsza płyta kontrbasisty Dana Loomisa jest interesującym i udanym przykładem tzw. albumu koncepcyjnego. Loomis wziął na warsztat historię biblijnego Hioba i opakował ją w słowno – muzyczny cykl. Pomysł miał swój początek około dziesięciu lat wcześniej. Grywany na koncertach i zmieniany przez niemal dekadę, przyjął wreszcie formę ostateczną.
Album zawiera siedem minutowych recytacji (z muzycznym podkładem) oraz siódemkę korespondujących z nimi utworów muzycznych. Narratorem recytowanych fragmentów jest Szatan, a w jego rolę wcielił się Daniel Breaker, broadwayowski aktor, jeden z gwiazdorów „Hamiltona”, wielkiego musicalowego przeboju ostatnich lat. Ciekawostką jest, że ze względu na napięty harmonogram występów, nagrał całość kwestii na płytę przez niecałą godzinę.
Kwestie Szatana napisane zostały przez Loomisa. On również jest kompozytorem całości materiału poza finałowym „Dear Lord” Johna Coltrane’a. Natomiast w utworach muzycznych wykorzystano wersety z różnych przekładów biblijnej Księgi Hioba. Początkowo sądziłem, że interludia z szatańską wersją historii Hioba będą nieco męczące. Yoon Sun Choi i Song Yi Jeon stanowią dwa kolejne instrumenty w muzycznej układance Loomisa. Najbardziej wyrazisty i poruszający. Wzbudzają zachwyt śpiewem i emocjonującymi wokalizami. Prowadzą narrację wspólnym głosem, ale potrafią też znakomicie skontrastować opowieść w dwóch równoległych liniach. W utwory przenikają elementy bluesa, muzyki etnicznej i piosenki, tworząc niezwykle pasjonującą, spójną całość. Warto na koniec wspomnieć kilka słów o liderze całego przedsięwzięcia. Prowadzi własny kwartet, jest współliderem grupy SPOKE oraz The Wee Trio. Gra ponadto w triach Joela Frahma i Vadima Neselovsky’ego, udziela się jako sideman, brał udział w nagraniu zornowskiego syklu „Book of Beriah”. Te rekomendacje oraz opisywana tu płyta to jeszcze jeden argument by działania Loomisa uważnie obserwować.
